Sebastian’s story is such a strange one. A wise and experienced cat rescuer/ trapper noticed he had been dumped near her property. He looked terrified and her heart went out to him. It was coyote country. She asked if I would take him. When I said Yes! ( I love the red boys) she set about trapping him. It was unusually hard, he was so frightened and it took her weeks of stormy February weather to catch him.

We put him in a little room and he hid. He squeezed himself into a corner. “Leave me alone” he said. He ate and used his box. He didn’t look out the window. He would not lie in a cat bed. He was totally passive and nonaggressive. We expected him to lighten up and go back to being the pet we believed him to be. We gave him flea meds, wormers, FVRCP and took him to the vet to be neutered and combo tested. (He was negative for both). He didn’t want anything to do with us. We were disappointed and frustrated and worried. Maybe he wasn’t a pet.

After three-plus months of this, I thought I saw a different look in his eye, he was looking right at me. He slept now in a hard basket, was that an improvement? We moved him to a different room nearer to us and other kitties. After a couple of days, he allowed some petting, and then Wow!! out tumbled this big affectionate love bug. He showed he had a deep rumbling purr- he’s the cat world equivalent of Johnny Cash. He solicited pets and kneaded in his now-used soft cat bed, he played with our feet. “I am really a total sweetheart” he said.

What had caused him to be so shut down and for so long? Did he become lost? was he suddenly abandoned? did a coyote almost get him? We will never know but we know he’s definitely back.

Sebastian’s a very sensitive, gentle boy as the red boys tend to be.( I call them the Golden Retrievers of the cat world.) He would be good with children and probably other non-dominant cats. I don’t know about dogs. He is big and solid, 13+ pounds. He needs to be protected and kept safe. Siberians, like Ragdolls, want a calm, peaceful, quiet home. Sebastian is a healthy boy and an easy keeper as they say, easy to feed, and good with his box. He still looks sad in some photos but that is fading. A Siberian owner said he is definitely a Siberian. Of course, not all Siberians are hypoallergenic for all people.

He will need an understanding family who will not push him or worry as he settles in. What fun to watch this sweet boy unfold even further into the safety of his new loving home.

Sebastian is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, eats wet and dry food, and is litterbox perfect.

He is fostered by Harriet in Santa Cruz.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interests!
