Born ~2015, M, Melanistic (Black) Bengal
Remember the beautiful, young, Savannah girl Tempe? This is her “Best Friend”. He was neutered at 6 months old and never Tempe’s boyfriend, but both he and Tempe cry a little when separated. As far as I know, though they are from the same cattery, they first met each other in my foster home. They are certainly a bonded pair and must go home together. No exceptions.
Bengals come in several colors : for example Snow Bengals, Brown and Silver Spotted Bengals, and yes, Melanistic Bengals. These elegant black panther lookalikes do have the Bengal’s rosettes and bandings. Santos has these markings, but as is common for Melanistic Bengals, they are quite hard to make out except in just the right light. Santos was his breeder’s special pet and as such he is very friendly and will welcome strangers. He has a super nice disposition. He is an active boy and wants to play and explore and loves feathers.
As Bengals go he is an easy boy to take care of. He loves to climb and be up high. He is a good jumper and floats effortlessly upward as he jumps. He loves attention from humans of all sorts. Santos finds the world around him entertaining and challenging. His black silhouette moving with lithe grace is gorgeous. Look how his silky black fur shines and gleams. He is wonderful.
He and Tempe are a VERY unusual pair of fascinating kitties. Some family will be so lucky to live with them. I don’t know how Santos is with dogs but I would expect he would be confident and fine. I expect he would also be fine after a slow introduction with other non-aggressive cats. Santos would be comfortable with younger children than Tempe is but since they are going home together we are looking for a home without kids under 10 or so. Tempe is still growing up and is very likely an earlier generation kitty (closer to her wild heritage) than Santos.
These two kitties need a family experienced with Bengals and Savannah’s. I tell folks Bengals are a life style choice. Their new family’s first order of business after love is to offer these kitties a home they do not get out of. The intelligence of these cats mixed with their speed, agility and mischievous nature make this not as easy as it may sound. This is a case of the human mind needing to out think these kitties’ curious, mischievous minds. There is a reason why so many Bengals are found lost and are taken to shelters!
Santos’ family needs to want to center their lives around his and Tempe’s needs. Generally these cats fit well with active, high energy humans. It would be great if their family could build them an escape-proof catio with lots of climbing opportunities. (BTW you need to have concrete in the ground around the perimeter.) I would not suggest these athletes for a family with little children or anyone who is unsteady on their feet. Santos and Tempe are cats who will take work, compromise and dedication from their new family. What they give back in companionship and delight is beyond words.
Santos eats grain free and by-product free wet and dry food and loves raw chicken tenders. These cats need high protein food. He is litterbox perfect.
His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
