About Sierra

In August 2024, our little family—me, my spouse, and our two-year-old tuxedo cat, Lorraine—began an exciting new chapter, moving from Long Beach to Sacramento. My spouse had just started a new job, I had enrolled in an online bachelor’s program, and Lorraine was eagerly exploring every nook of her new kingdom. Amid all the change, a quiet longing stirred in our hearts. It felt like the right moment to open our home—and our hearts—to another furry soul. We prepared for this new possibility, setting up a second cat tree, scattering the living room with extra toys, and waiting for the moment when the right companion would come along.
Meanwhile, across town, another family was navigating a heartbreak that words could barely capture. A couple, their young son, and their two cherished cats, Willow and Sierra, were facing the unthinkable: saying goodbye to the pets who had been their constant companions for over a decade. Willow and Sierra had filled their home with love, laughter, and countless memories, and the thought of parting with them was unbearable. With a rapidly approaching deadline, they turned to friends, family, and eventually Facebook groups, praying for a miracle. Willow found a home first, but Sierra—a stunning tortie with enchanting green eyes—still needed a family.
Desperate and determined to give Sierra the life she deserved, they contacted a local shelter for guidance. In an act of compassion, the shelter suggested Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue, even though they typically worked with purebred cats. When the PPCR team heard Sierra’s story, they couldn’t turn her away. They shared her profile online, hoping it would reach the right person.
That person turned out to be me. The moment I read Sierra’s story, my heart knew: she was meant to be ours. I filled out the application without hesitation, and once it was approved, I called Sierra’s family. What followed was a nearly two-hour conversation with her mom—a conversation filled with shared stories, tears, and an immediate, undeniable connection. It felt like more than chance; it felt like our paths had been destined to cross.
We arranged for Sierra’s family to bring her to our home, and in the days leading up to her arrival, we prepared a quiet, cozy space just for her. When the day came, the emotions were overwhelming. Sierra’s family arrived with her favorite toys, blankets, and an outpouring of love that left us in awe. Her mom shared every detail about her—a fondness for the Sierra Nevada Mountains (the inspiration for her name), her favorite way to be petted, even her quirks and habits. It was a beautiful, bittersweet exchange, heavy with the weight of goodbye but also full of hope for what lay ahead.
Sierra settled in with remarkable grace. Her sassy meows and bold purrs quickly revealed the spirited tortie she truly is. Lorraine, ever the cautious queen, watched with curiosity as Sierra explored her new home. We took things slow, introducing them through a baby gate, sharing treats, and fostering gentle interactions. Now, just a month later, their cautious companionship is blossoming into a sweet friendship.
I don’t know if it was fate that brought Sierra to us, but it certainly feels like it. However it happened, I’m endlessly grateful for the love, trust, and serendipity that made her a part of our family.
