About Norton From Nevada
Hi, I’m Norton, and I’m lucky to call Sparks, Nevada, my home, just east of Reno and Lake Tahoe. My journey with fostering began back in 2009, and from that time until 2018, I had the joy of fostering 145 cats. Every vet visit was a highlight, with everyone excited to meet our newest feline friends and lend a hand in their care.
Life Outside Fostering
After more than 25 years in Technical and Customer Support, I retired in 2010. Now, I spend my days helping PPCR by posting cat photos and bios on Facebook and Petfinder, sharing these sweet cats’ stories to find them loving homes. When I’m not volunteering, I dive into computer gaming, read as much as I can, and indulge my love for trains.
My Own Feline Family
I live with four wonderful cats: Indy, a long-haired Russian Blue lookalike; Fluffernutter, a fluffy sweetheart; Phoenix, a purebred Abyssinian; and Razanova, our spirited Lykoi who keeps us all entertained.
A Little Known Fact
A fun bit about me—I once survived a near-capsizing ship experience while in the U.S. Navy. That taught me resilience, something these rescue cats often inspire in me all over again.
My Role at PPCR
As PPCR’s Social Media Coordinator, I focus on sharing our cats’ stories. I take care to capture their personalities in each photo and bio, letting their true selves shine through. Each post is carefully crafted to show the unique character of every cat waiting for a family.
Why I Chose PPCR
After the heartbreak of losing two beloved cats in less than a year, I couldn’t bring myself to adopt again just yet. But I knew I wanted to keep supporting cats however I could. Volunteering allowed me to continue sharing my love for cats in a way that helped them without the emotional toll of losing them. In fact I fostered cats and kittens for over 6 years!
What Volunteering Has Taught Me
Through PPCR, I’ve learned how to bring out the best in each cat, helping them warm up to people and thrive. It’s amazing to watch a timid or aloof cat transform into a purring bundle of joy, eager for human companionship.
Compassion in Action
To me, “Compassion in Action” is about letting your care for others guide you. It’s one thing to feel compassionate, but when you actively show it—especially to animals—it can change lives. It means giving these cats space to be themselves, nurturing their growth, and ensuring they feel safe and loved.
Seeing Others Embody This Theme
It warms my heart to see my fellow PPCR volunteers go the extra mile for cats who need extra care. I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations, especially with special needs cats or those with serious illnesses like FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), which once was a death sentence. With care and patience, these cats blossom and even recover against the odds.
