About Manxer
Adopted by Kimberly
Born ~2014, Male, Manx-Main Coon Mix
Manxer is brown tabby Manx-Main Coon mix. A most usual combination of kitty. He is approximately 2 years old. He spent his early life with a family that included older children, cats, and a cat friendly dog. He loved them all and was playful and happy. When his dog friend passed, the family added a new puppy to the mix. The unsupervised puppy focused on making Manxer miserable for months — constantly lunging, attacking and barking at him. Manxer bolted outdoors and refused to come in or eat. His weight plummeted. He finally was dropped off at the local shelter with the reason being he did not get along with other animals! This erroneous information led to Manxer being classified as unadoptable. Fortunately, the shelter alerted Purebreds Plus before acting on this misinformation. Manxer was rescued on his last day and placed into foster with other cats.
After time and TLC, Manxer realized that he was safe again. He perked up, made friends with his feline co-fosters, and engaged in serious eating and playing. His weight climbed back up to over 10 lbs (an ideal Manx weight for his age). He quickly grew to trust his foster parents. His personality blossomed. He now exhibits a keen sense of fun, playfulness, optimism, and a fair turn of speed when he decides to kick up his long back legs and run through the house with his foster cat friends. But, he always has time to cuddle and play with his foster parents. He loves trakball, feather wands, toy mice (which makes sense since Manx have been mousers for over 266 years). His long back legs may get in the way of curling up on your lap, but he will happily curl up next to you for a session of pets and purrs.
Manxer as a Manx-Main Coon mix is a combo cat. Starting at his head, you think you have a gorgeous Maine Coon mix — big head, Maine Coon nose, amazing whiskers, copper eyes, “long ear furnishings”, ruff, brindle longish fur, a sweet Maine Coon smile, and big purr — but if you keep going down his back, oops he is a Manx with long back legs, and no tail, not even a bump. So, there you have it – a gorgeous, purring Maine Coon-Manx (front to back) or Manx-Maine Coon (back to front). In either case this gorgeous cat is a sweet lovable boy, looking for his very own home. And if you adopt him, he will deliver 2x the love since both Maine Coons and Manx are known for bonding with their owners.
So why no tail? Tailless Manx cats all relate back to a genetic mutation that happened around 1750 in the cats on the remote island of Manx. The long back legs developed to provide the balance that a tail would provide. Because of those long back legs, Manx are very particular about bathroom hygiene. Manxer will stand upright with front paws on the side of the box when he uses the facility. And he is fastidious on post box grooming of his rear no matter how silly he looks – as you can see in one of the pictures.
Manxer would like a home with a kitty friend(s). He is willing to try a cat friendly dog so long as he has a proper introduction period this time. He would do best with older children.
Manxer is neutered, up to date on vaccines, FELV/FIV negative, dewormed, microchipped and has flea prevention applied. His health is A-OK. He loves to be brushed, but can care for his coat himself.
Manxer’s foster mom is Diane in Sacramento, CA.
