About Dashiell
Adopted by Eric and Windi
Dashiell was bought as a kitten and when he was neutered he was also declawed on his front legs. Of course declawing hurts a cat physically but it also hurts a cat psychologically. Declawed cats know they are mostly defenseless. The reach of their front legs with their ten claws to slash at an attacker is their main means of self protection.Their teeth are negligible compared to those moving sharp weapons.
Dashiell is a classic example of the fearfulness caused by declawing. When confronted with an even mildly scary situation Dashiell runs to hide. For example, since Dashiell was doing so well with us we let him out to walk around his foster home. A nice girl kitty hissed at him once and he instantly panicked and ran, looking to hide. So upset. This surprised us because he is such a love bug and was relaxed with us. But it was a good lesson to tell us what he needs in his new home.
When she left him at the shelter his owner told them she had married a man in 2021 who really disliked him.( He liked dogs) Like the sensitive little love obsessed Himalayan he is, Dashiell knew this and didn’t deal well with it. It is easy to think the man showed Dash the strength of his dislike when his mom wasn’t around but we don’t know that. We do know that he lived hiding and scared for many months. Dashiell is also scared of the vacuum and loud voices and loud strangers. He does well with children.
I went to the shelter to get him immediately. I think Flame Himalayans are absolute treasures, vulnerable little love machines who must be protected and cherished their whole lives. I always say yes to taking them. Dashiell surprised us by becoming his friendly loving self quite quickly. The strain left his eyes and he ate well and looked to us for love. His relief was evident. Poor little guy to feel so scared in his home.
Well, he is actually not so little -he weighs 15 pounds and is not all fluffy fur. He is a big boy and utterly beautiful. Dashiell is a healthy cat. He once had crystals in his urine and was put on a special diet but he wasn’t fed that diet and has done fine anyway.
So what Dashiell needs is clear. He needs a peaceful, happy home that is stable and quiet, that has a human or humans who see his loving tender heart and are thrilled to have his company. He lives for love. He likes playing with balls and with his climbing tree but love is the center of any Himalayan’s existence.
Some family will be so lucky to have him in their lives.
Dashiell is neutered, vaccinated, FELV tested, dewormed, microchipped, eats wet and dry food, and is litterbox perfect.
He is fostered by Harriet in Santa Cruz.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interests!
