About Clarissa
A small breeder brought me these two siblings, Clarence and Clarissa, and 11 month old Cornelius who has been adopted. She was moving and her life with kids and husband changing jobs was super busy. “Could I take these kittens?” she asked. Did I hesitate before saying YES? No you are right I did not hesitate a minute. Not a second. These six month old kittens are a once in a life time spectacular pair.
Clarence has turquoise blue eyes. His sister, Clarissa, has emerald eyes. Both have the slightly black tipped fur of Silver Chinchilla Persians. Their fur is very long – you can see that in the plume of their tails. They arrived not yet fixed – actually all were described as males. Clifford became Clarissa at the vet. We have had them spayed and neutered. Both have had some matts shaved from their backs. Clarence has had some hair from his tail shaved or pulled out. Their coats will grow back. You can see the luxuriousness of the coat by looking at the long, long hair in Clarissa’s tail. These kitties will need a lifetime of almost daily grooming. These darlings are high maintenance cats.
These little kittens are part of a small breed. Even at 7 months they are both about 4 pounds 11 ounces. They were driven up from San Diego and were a bit shell shocked when they arrived into foster with me. For the first week we carefully watched their weight and food consumption. (They were 3+ pounds each at 6 months old – tiny!!) They did not eat well consistently.
After a few weeks these two settled into their foster home and are now eating and gaining weight consistently. Silver Chinchillas are often said to be the most fragile of the Persian cats. Their new family needs to want the job of being very careful with them, very aware of how they are doing. These are not wash and wear cats who will need to go to the vet every few years. Clarissa and Clarence seem to be very healthy kittens but their new family needs to be ready to give them special attention and medical care throughout their lives. I might add that Silvers own the world and charmingly demand their wishes be granted to them. Some also say they are the most popular cat in the world. Ernst Stavro Blofeld absently petted a Silver Chinchilla in the Bond movie “You Only Live Twice”.
Here are some Silver Chinchilla breed standards:
- Silver Chinchillas have emerald, green or turquoise or blue green eyes.
- A special trait is the black eyeliner that sets off their nose mouth and eyes. No pink.
- They are bred to have a doll face as you can see here – their nose is deliberately bred to be below the eyes. This adorable look is far healthier, the Silver’s breathing is not restricted the way it is in “peke faced” Persians which have the nose up between the eyes.
- Silvers have a pure white undercoat and the ends of the fur are tipped in either black or blue or not at all. Their fur throws off sparkling silver accents.
- Their paw pads (toe beans) are black.
So what are they like? Clarissa is more of the world explorer. She will wind around your feet and rub your shoes. Clarence starts out watching from up on high then he comes down to play with her. They love to play. Clarence is a super sweet boy. Chinchillas are mild, loyal companions. These two are easy to groom, pick up and fuss with. If you hold them too long” they are both very good at wiggling (see photos). Their breed is described as a little “demanding” but I expect their besotted guardians are only to happy to pamper and spoil them.
Clarence and Clarissa are very bonded together and they must be adopted together. No Exceptions please. I don’t know how they are with dogs but they seem to be cat friendly. I would not suggest they be adopted by a family with young children, they are all the children their new family could ever need.
They eat wet and dry food and are litterbox perfect.
I expect to receive quite a number of interested applicants for this pair. Please, if you put in an application for them, be patient and give me time to get back to you. Their new family needs to be very experienced taking care of Persians.
Their foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interest!
