About Calvin
Hey! Who ate Calvin’s whiskers? You can see they are now super short. Perhaps you didn’t know but kittens munch on each others or their own whiskers. We see this a lot generally when kittens are cuddled up half asleep but we have absolutely no idea why it happens. It is a consensual munching. Somehow pleasurable? Calvin wouldn’t allow it if it weren’t ok with him, no one munches on him against his will. And then again, he might have munched his own whiskers. They grow back.
This boy is a play monster. He is very happy, athletic and active. He LOVES to play with toys, to explore, to race around, get into trouble, act like a nut and be joyous. He is so much fun. He could go home as an only kitten he has so much fun all by himself. He could also go home to companion another cat but I think it would need to be a very confident, energetic kitty. Calvin can be a bit too much for a quiet beta cat or kitten( his playfulness can be annoying). He would probably love to have his own indestructible dog to play with.I have never seen him with dogs but it feels like a very good match. Words to describe him are confident, “Outgoing”, “Dominant” and “Full of vitality”. This is not to imply that he is not a very sweet, loving boy- he certainly is wonderfully loving – but it is his health and energy that grabs your attention right now.
This boy was a “singleton”, a kitten that was brought in to the shelter all alone . He was tiny, 15 ounces, and had to go to rescue the day he came in, by 8 pm, or be euthanized. Over-busy, over-full shelters cannot take care of teeny tiny kittens hence the one day rule. Save-a Kitten in San Jose helps these kittens find rescues every single night and they do a very difficult, heart rending job since they can’t save them all. I say yes to them whenever I can. They know me well enough to know I love, and can’t resist, the red boys.
Unlike most tiny kittens who are a lot of work and trouble Calvin was no trouble at all. He flourished with his great energy from day one. He ate well, he had perfect poop, he used his box, he had clear eyes, no sneezes, no kitten colds, nothing. It was amazing how healthy he was. Of course we all fell madly in love with him.
He is a great guy and always friendly to humans. He enjoys everything which includes being held and cuddled .His sweet connected to humans side has been growing recently. You can see in the photo’s he is utterly relaxed when he is held. Of course he is enormous fun to be around.He has been growing very quickly and will be a fairly large kitty, just look at the size of his paws. His fur is still growing and has changed a great deal in the last month. His coat is now fuzzy and thick, a long length as it should be for a Maine Coon .Look at the change in the size of his tail. He has a great plume of a tail now. He is going to be a very beautiful, big Maine Coon boy.
As is true for all kittens and particularly for this adventurous boy he needs to be protected by his new family the way a toddler child is protected by his or her parents. And he must be carefully kept inside. For that reason a family with young children is probably not a good match for him.He would be fine with them, I think, but it is harder to keep a quick, agile kitty inside when youngsters have play dates etc. If he got out he would probably want to go out again. Nothing seems to scare him.
Calvin is going to be great fun for some lucky family. He is very entertaining. His loving nature will delight his humans. He will probably become more of a couch potato when he is older. The red boys are known for mellowing with age.
In the photos below you will see older photos with shorter hair (for example the first, second and third photos) and some recent photographs showing how long his coat is now ( photo # five, six and ten ). This is a dramatic change in a change in just a few weeks. Kittens are fun, you can never really tell how they will end up looking.
Calvin eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interest!
