About Billy Braveheart

Adopted by Rachel & AJ

Born ~9/12/2017, M, Red Spotted Tabby Maine Coon Mix

Kittens, like kids, get colds. Kitten colds usually involve lots of eye discharge (gunk). Billy Braveheart arrived at the shelter with both eyes really swollen and gummed shut. He was three weeks old, tiny, at three quarters of a pound, hungry, blind and alone. Shelters appeal to rescues to take on the care of these little kittens because they are not set up to do so themselves. If they are not out of the shelter, to an approved rescue, the same day they come in they are put down that same evening.

We syringe fed this kitten six times a day and gave him lots of medications in his mouth and also on his eyes. So incredibly vulnerable, he wanted the warmth of our hands and loved being held. It took four long days for his swollen eyelids to shrink down and allow his eyes to peak out at the world. He was always very cooperative about eating – like a hungry little bird. By his sixth day with us he had two round, beautiful, open eyes, he was eating out of a bowl, and he played with everything. He was the cutest kitten in the world. What a quick and total turn around. (We were thrilled!)

Braveheart hasn’t looked back. Kittens gain about a pound a month. Billy gained two pounds 6 ounces in three weeks! What a happy piggy he is! His tummy got so enticingly soft and round we all wanted to pet him constantly. He is going to be a big cat, I think. His paws are very large. Unlike most red tabby Maine Coons he is very clearly spotted on his back, sides, and tummy. What fun. He likes to stand on his two hind feet, like King Kong, and bat at feathers.

This kitten’s joy in life is enormous. Is it extra large because he went thru a hard time of blindness and loneliness? I don’t know but he sure is full of life. He will be fixed in a week and ready for his new home. He is at a younger age than I usually choose for kitten adoptions but he is so exuberant and growing so fast I feel he needs his new home to romp in. He is still learning about everything, every minute of his playtime.

Billy needs a home with one or more young playful kitties or kittens. Middle aged, gentle children would probably be fine with him. I don’t know about dogs. He is still a very little guy and his family needs to protect him carefully until he can grow bigger and more knowledgeable about the world. He is perfectly willing, for example, to fall off anything. Billy is very trusting of humans so he needs (and who doesn’t ?) gentle, loving hands and hearts. And of course, responsible parents.

Billy Braveheart eats lots of everything wet and dry and is litterbox perfect.

He will be available to go home on 11/20/17 or after.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.

NOTE: We prefer families with children bring them to the adoption appointment. Why? This allows interaction between the children and the cat. This helps ensure they will be a good fit for each other. A mismatch between a child and a cat is not in anyone’s best interest!
